how to throw a Cowgirl Dinner ParTAY!

I don't know about you, but for me a good ol' fashioned partAy always does this girl some good! Girls only. Plenty of scrumptious food. And a game or two to mix it up! I am up for a girls night out anytime of year, but my soul craves one in the dead of winter. I need something to focus on, something to plan, something to look forward to.

Last year because I was cooking through P-dubs cookbook, I did her Cowgirl Dinner Party menu.....and well it was quite the HIT! In fact my gals would have hog tied me, I think, if I hadn't thrown another.

I'd love to share my planning process with you....

Before even starting #1. ask you hubby if he would be so kind to take the kiddos out the night of the party....basically ask him to get lost for a few hours and then when he does get home, he needs to put the kiddos to bed and vamoose(no hangin' around)!

1. I made a list of my cowgirls from last year and then added some more. 18 in all. Go big or go home that's my motto. But if you are more comfortable with a more intimate dinner party, do what you are comfortable with....please don't feel the need to follow in my craziness.

2. A month before the party date I sent out a save the date email, letting them know an invite would follow. Last year I just sent an email...that's good enough, I think. The only reason I sent out invites this year is because my girlfriend gave them to me last year at the end of the last party, so I would throw another party. So I just hadta use um!

3. Two weeks out I sent out the invites, and included a card that asked the girls to bring aWhite Elephant gift. I told them that regifting was strongly advised and to be creative with the wrapping!

4. Five days prior to the party I made a very detailed list of the groceries I would need.

5. Two days prior I went grocery shopping and cleaned my hacienda....well a little bit.

6. The day before the party I made everything that I could make ahead of time. And bought lots of flowers and put them in random vases around the party zone. (Winter calls for flowers, they help lift moods.) I also made sure I had all my dishes, serving utensils, and linens out and cleaned.

7. The day of the party. Kenny took our hairy mongrel Jack to the groomer for me (if you don't have a big hairy pesky golden retriever then slash this detail, I didn't want his stinkyness to ruin any ones appetite). I spruced up the the house a bit. I prepared any food that needed to be made yet. And I asked a my sister and Big D to come over early to help me finish getting set up. They were a huge help, wiping wine glasses and taste testing the Bacontini's! ***Don't be afraid to ask friends for help!

NOTE: If a party like this sounds fun, but the idea of cooking and planning for days completely FREAKS you out, then get a bunch of your favorite gals together and divy up the food, make it more of a potluck. Hey they are your friends right, I am sure they would still love it just as much and it's all about getting together and enjoying each other, right?! This night was not with out blunder, or mess, and my house would not have passed the white glove test. Just so Ya'll know. I want this to inspire you to get together with friends! Make some memories!

So here is how it went down. I will have to say the White Elephant gift game was a blast, and proceeded to get entirely out of hand. Thus I will have to hold back on showing you photos of some of the gifts...since this is a family friendly site. Girls, girls, girls...tisk, tisk.

I used white table cloths, and random candle holders from the dollar store for table decorations.

Here is the Vodka that I infused with bacon to make the Bacontini's. These where a tad bit labor intensive...but OH MY! HEAVENS TO BETSY they are CRAZY yummy! If you are into bacon chocolate alcoholic beverages that is.

I decided to forgo P-dubs Sangria, because I had so much left over last year, and just do wine and beer. Water, and pop were also offered.

Big D said, "I likey" to the Bacontini! I waited until my sister and Big D got there to give them a try....so we had a little pre-party cocktail. (Be careful doing this it could really get you behind in your TOdo list)

Then the gals started arriving. This is always the most awkward part for me at a party. How to greet everyone, and do introductions.....UGH, I feel like a I always fall short during this period of a party. I'm working on it....anyone have any good suggestions on how you manage arrival time?

This a gift I received from a couple of my cowgirls. I just had to share it with you. Not that I am totally agree with this poem...lets just say I can appreciate it!

Cowgirl Prayer
God grant me the patience to change the men I can,
The aim to shoot the men I can't,
and the wisdom to know the difference!

Can I get an AMEN?

For starters we had The Pioneer Womans Olive Bread....life changing. I crave this stuff. It is so gol' darn fattening, I only make it for parties.

Jalepeno Thingys. TDF.

My gal Rebecca and I are going to start a Sisterhood of the Jalepeno Thingy. They are not every ones gig....but if you do fall head over heals for them, it can be a very dangerous thingy!

What's a girly party with out a little guac?!!!

And of course chips and salsa...I made this salsa.

THE DINNER: I love a Wedge Salad. So that's what we had. I will share with you the prep and how I served it, REAL soon.

Beef Tenderloin, Creamy Herb Potatoes, and the MUSHROOMS!

There it is the plate full of deliciously filling and comforting cowgirl food. Be still my heart.

Look at Kenny, he thinks he is being really sneaky. Just makin' himself plate a food, which is fine, but my boy likes to eavesdrop. Look at him, he is totally lingering...trying to listen in on what us gals are yackin' about. I think I finally shoo'd him away. He cracks me up!

White Elephant game. Oh my this turned into to one of the biggest laugh fests in the history of dinner parties at our house. I received emails the next day from some of the girls saying that their abs actually hurt! I don't know about my abs..(I just have flabs these days), but my cheeks hurt and my voice was hoarse the next day. Click on White Elephant if you have never played to get the low down on how it goes.

The above was a plant from a funeral....HOKEY PETE!

I received a life time supply of chocolate pudding! A very fitting gift.

Big D received the much coveted Moose Wine Bottle Holder. YIKers!

Meg received "The Perfect Man", I think she was informing us all here that she already has the perfect man....yeh, yeh, yeh, we know!

Well a certain book, on a certain activity, was gifted to someone...it was so interesting that pages were ripped from it and recited aloud. This is where things began to get out of hand.

Time for Creme Brulee'!!

Creme Brulee is so easy. It really is. Eggs, heavy cream, vanilla, and sugar, and then you need a torch and some ramekins. I received the torch thingy as a gift and then I have picked up ramekins here and there. It's always a hit!

A little "CRam Brulette", (that's what my Cece calls it) and berrys was all it took to reign the girls back in.

It was a great night. I didn't want anyone to go. I think we all definetly needed a girls night out! Oh yeah the Naked Cowboy made another appearance. He's really not naked, you know that right?

Luv ya!

Chicken Fontinella revisited

I shared this recipe back in July. I think it's worth sharing again. It's easy to prepare. It's cheesy, creamy, flavor is comforting. The spinach adds much needed vitamin C and iron this time of year. Now don't write this one off because it's full of spinach....."my kids will never eat that!". Do they need to know? Well, I realize they will see it in there...just make them take one bite. My vegetable hater...child #3 even tolerates this meal. (I think he secretly loves it, but his pride keeps him from admitting it!)

I needed to bring a meal to a family in our church that just had a baby, I decided on this dish. One, because it's great leftover. Two, because it's healthy for the nursing mama's. Three, it freezes well so if they already have lots of meals, they could stick it in the freezer and pull it out when they need it. Four, because my kiddos love it so I figure other people would hopefully enjoy it too!

One dish, easy bring them salad and a crusty loaf from the bakery and this meal is complete. I also made some Pumpkin Spice Donut Muffins for a breakfast treat.

Did I say it's easy to double and triple the recipe? You will need a gargantuan bowl, but if you have one you could make a couple of these one to give, one for the freezer, and one for dinner tonight!

Here's what you will need. Chances are you have it all in your pantry. If you don't have the Fontinella cheese, the italian variety of shredded cheese works just as well.

Chicken Fontinella
printable recipe
2 box Uncle Ben's original recipe long grain wild rice (not the fast cook)
4 cups of water
6 oz ham steak cubed
1 lb. of chicken breast or ground chicken
2 cloves of garlic minced
1 cup fontinella cheese grated
1/2 cup mozzarella
1/4 cup Parmesan
1 stick of butter
1 tablespoon olive oil
1/4 cup milk
2 cups of spinach washed and chopped finely

Here is the original post if you want to see the step by step with directions.

Remember it's nice to share!

You have to make these MUSHROOMS!

Tomorrow I am hosting my Cowgirl Dinner Party , for all my Cowgals! Actually, none of my gals have cows. We have cows on our property....but they are not ours, so I don't really qualify as a Cowgirl either. I threw the party last year when I was cooking and blogging through The Pioneer Woman Cooks.

The ladies gave me invites for my next party....WOW they were putting the pressure on, assuming the parTAY would be fabulous enough to want me to do another one. Well, it was. And I am. I just wish I could have invited everyone. But my house isn't quite that accommodating. Here's the invitation...know that if I coulda I woulda invited ya'll!

A party is always a good way to break the winter blues don't ya think? Mix it up a bit. Give everybody something to look forward to. Good food, lots of laughs, and girls ONLY! No kids, NO boys!

It's also an excuse to buy flowers. Lots and Lots of fresh flowers. I love fresh flowers.

Initially I thought that I would change it up this year. Make it my own. But then my Cowgirls kept asking what I was going to serve. When I mentioned that I was going to change it up the response was always "well you're gonna make those mushrooms still aren't you?". So then I tried to figure out how I could make them fit into my meal plan......and it wasn't quite meshing. So I figured, "What the HEY!", why mess with a good menu!!! So I am doing the Cowgirl Dinner Party from The Pioneer Woman Cooks cookbook again, with a few extra's!

You need to make these mushrooms. Just once in your life you need to make them.

I could actually bath in them that's just how amazing and comforting Burgundy Mushrooms are! I ate the leftovers for breakfast last year. It's not my recipe, it's P-dubs. So you will have to get it from her. It's in her cookbook.

WHAT you don't have the cookbook?

Too bad so sad for you.

Would you buy the dam cookbook already people.....OK sorry. She's not paying me to push her cookbook, I promise. I guess if you're going to be stubborn and not buy the cookbook then you could go here for the recipe. Burgundy Mushrooms are TRULY life changing.

I am hoping mine turn out as fabulously as they did last year. I put them on the stove this morning....they take a minimum of 7 hours to cook. Yeh, I know that's why I haven't made them since last year. I was talking to my dad on the phone while trying to read the recipe and get them cookin'. My dad needs responses. There is to be no dead space while on the phone with my father. If I am not saying "uh-huh", or "oh really", or "ya don't say" after everything he says he yells, "ARE YA THERE?". So I didn't read the part about not adding the salt till the end of the cooking time.

Gol~darnIT! I added it. I'm saying a prayer that it won't matter. That they will still be FAB-U-losSO!

Well I hope you have a great day, I need to go call my insurance company before I go pick up the beef tenderloin. Heaven for bid I get in a car wreck and that piece-O-meat is not insured!

Luv Ya!

WHATdoYa KNOW?

Luckily, very few people read my blog, and those of you who do hopefully will forgive me.

Because WHATDOYAKNOW! It's not Fat Tuesday!

I'm a very large DorkenSchmorken. Thats German for dizzy lady. Not really but in my everyday German speech it is. Yes I have my own little German dialect that I have come up with over the years.....

But that's beside the point. The POINT is that I thought it was Fat Tuesday today, and it's NOT!

I realized this, unfortunately, after I hit post, jumped in my van to get my hairs refurbished, and I started thinking about the calendar. OH MY GOOODNESS OH MY GOODNESS (I heard Tooties voice in my head) It's not Fat Tuesday. What if readers everywhere are running out to buy paczki's and there are none???? What have I done?

EEEEErrrt...that's the noise of my brain screeching to a halt, because I am pretty sure no one ran anywhere....I am pretty sure if you did read, you may never come back and read my blather again.

I started calling people from the highway...I know that's even worse, than falsely posting that it's Fat Tuesday. I was able to get a hold of my sweet friend Dee.

"Dee is it Fat Tuesday?", I hollered in to the phone.

"What?"

"I just posted that it was Fat Tuesday, is it? Google it!!! Now WOMAN! GOOGLE!" Of course she sweetly said, "sure just a sec......Nope, it's not! Not until March 9."

Oh HEAVENS TO Betsy!!!!

I'm sorry. I'm sorry, that I you wasted your time...I'm sorry, I am such a dorken schmorken.

I'm REALLY sorry that I wasn't able to get me a dozen paczki's today!!!!

Fat Tuesday

It's Fat Tuesday. Every Tuesday feels like fat Tuesday for me....and fat Wednesday, Thursday, Friday, Saturday...then I take Sunday off. Sorry. Was that sacrilegious?

Today is the day before Ash Wednesday. The beginning of the Lenten Season...the period, in the liturgical year, leading up to Easter. I grew up in the Catholic faith. Please don't judge me for leaving the Catholic church. I have nothing against it. It just was not where I felt my faith could blossom. Many of the traditions and ways of my childhood religion teachings have stuck with me. Guilt mainly.

Just kidding...not really.

We were told we had to give something up for Lent. It wasn't a choice. I always gave up chocolate. But then kept a bag of M & M's under my bed, and nibbled on them. Oh I was a bad bad girl. The guilt killed me! "I swear Father the devil made me do it!"

Oh Golly, I could write for days on my experiences growing up in the Catholic Church, but I am afraid I might fluff some feathers. And I do not like to fluff feathers. I am a non-feather fluffing kinda gal.

I do believe that fasting is a very good thing, if done for the right reasons.

I am going to attempt to forgo eating after dinner. No snacking, no nibbles of popcorn, no M&M's under my bed. Only water.

Heaven help me.

This is going to be hard. (But that's the point, right?) If Jesus could go 40 days and 40 nights with out food or water and then endure death on a cross for me....well then I should darn well be able to not eat after dinner. You can be sure that I will be prayin'......you can be sure I will be down on my knees askin' the good Lord to help me not take a bite of what ever concoction my kids are begging me to make them for bedtime snacks. Cause you know for the next 40 days my kids are going to be famished at bedtime...they are going to be asking for pancakes, and malteds, grilled cheese, brownies, for me to be warming up leftovers from Thai food the night before!

I gotta go get myself a few dozen Paczkis. We have quite the population of Poles here in the Grand Rapids area. They are fun lovin' and they make a darn good Paczki! Berliner, or Jelly Donut....whatever you want to call um...they are good eaten. If you are into sweet fried dough, filled with fruit and glazed to perfection.

How do you observe Lent? Will you eat a paczki or two today? Whats your favorite filling? Prune, apple, blueberry, custard. I'd love to hear.

Have a great day!

roadTRIP continued

Walking around campus of Miami University.

Well it's been quite a day. We started it out in Oxford. Where we stayed the night after Kenny showing us all old haunts and former residences while in college. We ate pizza at Bruno's and bought t-shirts at the bookstore, and ended the night out at BTOyogurt! We stayed at the Holiday Inn Express in the middle of Oxford, which was a great location, until the bar fights broke out at 2am, then my kiddos got a lesson in inebriated undergrad vocabulary. Hopefully my eight year old isn't scarred for life.

Bruno's Dough is the BEST! Little garlicy nuggets of fried dough...ooh-lala!

After a quick recovery, the next morning, we grabbed some grub at a a local restaurant...that no one can remember the name of. It has a purple awning. They had good oatmeal. Sorry I was suffering from hangover by association with the drunkards that kept me awake half the night.

Cincinnati here we come! We drove straight to Joseph-Beth Booksellers, so I could get a line letter for Ree Drummond's Black Heels to Tractor Wheels book signing. I received the letter M. (M for Munchy Mouth) Better than I expected, when I heard they had started handing out line letters a week ago, I thought we didn't' have a chance in H. E. double hockey sticks! of getting in line for P-dub.

Then we decided to take in the sites of Cincinnati. It was a great day for a walk, 60 degrees and sunny! Who woulda thunk it, on February 18! So we are just walking around minded our own beeswax when what before my wondering eyes should appear but George Clooney and Ryan Gosling! (of The Notebook fame) They were filming a movie in a walkway over the street. So NO I did not exactly rub elbows with George and Ryan, but I saw them in the flesh. I love it when that kinda stuff happens! And yes they are CRAZY hot, especially when they are suspended above me like such.....

One time Dennis Rodman stepped out of a car, in Chicago, right in front of my sister and I. He was so close we could smell his cologne. That dude is big and bad lookin. Not the someone I was later wishing I had spontaneously hugged or something. Now Ryan Gosling, I might have spontaneously hugged! The weird thing about that night was that my sister and I were walking back to our hotel, and we smelled brownies.....we were bound and determined that we were going to figure out where that smell was coming from. We never did find the brownies. Dennis Rodman's strong cologne kind of knocked us off track.

I twittered our food adventure. Skyline Chili, Graeters Ice Cream, and then PF Changs was the plan. Well, we hit the first two, but ended up fore going PF Changs for fear that we would miss Ree. (Ree I luv ya so much I gave up PF Changs! That's big Darlin.) So we ate in Bronte's which is a restaurant in the bookstore. It was decent. We were all pretty starved by he time we finally ate so it could have actually stunk...but we were too hungry to know it!

Ree and the Johnson's.
(This is the only picture I's got. My only disappointment of the trip. I should have told the lady I handed my camera to to be a happy snapper. I look like a big dork..I know.)

They called letter M while we were eating so when we got done the line manager lady plopped me in line. And there I stood, heart thumping, books and camera in hand, texting like a maniac trying to get my family to get their booties up stairs where Ree was signing books so when I got to her they could quick sneak in a picture, without hogging a whole lot of space in line. While waiting in line a twitter friend Outatfirst said Hi. It was fun to meet her...but I realized I forgot to ask what her real name is. So sorry. Glad you recognized me and I got a hug from ya, Sweet Girl!

So then the group of gals ahead of me had a whole song they had rehearsed for Ree...then it was my turn.......

My littlest had asked me no less than 60 thousand times during the day if Ree would recognize me when she saw me... I kept reassuring her she would definitely recognize me. But then all of a sudden...her question rang loud in my ear, "will Pioneer Lady recognize you mama?" and then I panicked thinking what if she doesn't know me? And I have to explain to her who I am. Silly me! She did. She seemed taken aback a little, maybe it was the whole family descending upon her....maybe she was thinking gadzooks I can't shake this girl...but I'm gonna think she was genuinely surprised to see me and excited to meet my family. I introduced my kiddos, and she gave each one of them a hug. Then told Kenny that he had to bring us all the to the Ranch sometime.

Sorry to say he took you serious Ree. We'll be road trippin your way next week!

Skyline Chili, is where we ate lunch (after the hunk sitings and before the book signing), and had the sweetest waitress ever. The kiddos were less than enamored with Skyline. I'm glad I can say, "I tried it", but I don't think I will be craving it anytime soon.

Now Graeters Ice Cream on the other hand......OH MY GOODNESS GRACIOUS!!!! Can you say DANG GOOD ICE CREAM? I had the Chocolate Mocha Chip..MMMhmmm need I say more?!

The Creation Museum was one of our main destinations on this trip. It is a few miles south of Cincinnati in Petersburg, Kentucky. The kids enjoyed it. It stirred up a good theological conversation in the car. We continued to discussed all the questions over our BBQ at.....

The Montgomery Inn's Boathouse location, on the Ohio River. Thanks Kim for the great foodie recommendations! If you are in the Cincinnati area, and you are a lover of BBQ then you MUST give the Montgomery Inn a try, it was fabulous!

After our more than plentiful BBQ dinner we headed to the Premium Outlet Mall just north of town. We walked our dinner off and found ourselves a great hotel (Courtyard by Marriott) near the Ikea at the Mulhauser Rd exit 19. This is a great exit. Lots of nice hotels, a Starbucks, Ikea, movie theater, PF Changs....what more could a girl want?! All the boys wanted was to watch the NBA All Star game, so us girls ventured out for snacks and came back and chill-axed with the boys in front of the TV.

Sunday morning we arose to rainy, cold weather...no more sunny and 60's. We headed to Ikea for a cheap breakfast...and to look for martini glasses for the up and coming Cowgirl Dinner Party, then we got on the road and headed homeward.

Unfortunately this is what our trip home looked like. It was quite a drive, 7 long hours(normally it would take 5+hours) in the van with the kiddos. I have to say they were very good. But it got quite stinky in there by about the 5th hour. Very thankful to be home safe and sound. If this wasn't enough, you can read all the gory detail on my travel blog, when I get around to posting over there.

The kiddos have one more day off school today, and tomorrow it's back to school! I think I might eat my socks and take my girls to the Bieber Movie today....EGADs did I just admit that? I know, I know...he's a nice kid. I just pray he stays that way!

Hope you had a great weekend!

Luv Ya!

RoadTRIP

On the road again, I can't wait to be on the road again, the life I love is being stuck in a mini van with my kids...I can't wait to be on the road again!

Truly, I love being on the road with my family. As you can see they are all engrossed in the company of one another. This was after five minutes on the road. Three of them are actually interacting via Nintendo DS, and the fourth is catching up on his Calvin and Hobbes reading. What ever happened to the "sign game" or "license plate bingo"? I will admit they do get a kick out of making goofy faces at other commuters, and acting like they have lost their minds, by wiggling so much the van rocks. So I guess not all the car road trip antics of the past have been totally lost to modern technology. Although I did just pop in "The Sponge Bob Square Pants Movie", no road trip is quite complete with out a viewing of it or Nacho Libre. They make for great dinner conversation.

Some of the most repeated movie lines:
"We're on a baby hunt, and don't think we don't know how to weeeeed um out..."

" You don't need a license to drive a sandwich."

"Chancho, I need to borrow some sweeeats."

"I was wandering if you would like to come to my quarters, this night, for some toast?"

So where are we headed? Oxford, Ohio. I know, I know you're thinkin', "these people are real vacation thrill seekers!" Yeh, I know we like to live life on the edge. We decided to go all out for the kids mid-winter break!

Actually, we were planning on going skiing this weekend, but unfortunately my oldest son broke his humerus....which actually is not humorous! (Sorry I couldn't help myself.) He broke it while snowboarding last weekend, on a youth group retreat. So we changed gears and decided to take a trip to Oxford...which is where Kenny went to under-grad, at Miami of Ohio University. Go REDHAWKS! It's a quaint little town just 45 minutes north-westish of Cincinnati. So we'll show the kids their fathers old stompin' grounds, go into Cincinnati, check out the Creation Museum, and then head our butts home in time for the All-Star Basketball Game, which I promised my son he would be home in time to watch with his buds. Oh the life of a teenager!

So that's what I'm up to this week end, pretty much!

I feel like I haven't shared a recipe with you in a while. With the Week of Luv last week, I got a little behind...well I wish my behind had become little last week! (No such luck!) I did some cookin' last week, I will share that yummy goodness with you soon. Next week I am hosting my, Cowgirl Dinner Party, which I did for the first time when I cooked my way through P-dubs cookbook. So I will be busy preparing for that, this year I feel like I need to step it up a notch. I can't wait!!!

Right now I need to get back to co-piloting we need to find our lunch spot....weeese gettin' hungry! I think we are going to try to find the Liberty Diner in Fort Wayne. Have you ever been there? I'll let you know how it is.

What are you doing this weekend?

Luv,

Sheila
