I am THE reluctant entertainer, not sure if it is an excuse, but I just don't like it-makes me nervous for weeks in advance, oooh and so crabby. My mom and my sister love it, they make it look and seem effortless, I admire that, but I just don't have it. I do love to go to parties and I will gladly contribute in any way I can- I am also known to bring a good hostess gift every now and then:}.

You will love this book, it is full of useful information that hopefully will help you get over your anxioty of entertaining.

Thanks to all who entered. And thank you Sandy for the opportunity to share your book again!!

Bittersweet- giveaway WINNER and Triple Chocolate Pound Cake Recipe!

Oh Golly some of your comments brought tears to my eyes and left a large lump in my throat. Life is so hard at times. We gotta keep on keepin' on. Looking for the opportunity to give glory to God for what he is going to do with each day, bitter or sweet. If you didn't win today, please considering getting a copy Bittersweet by Shauna Niequist in your grimy little hands. It is a must read. Hey it's not too late to add things to your Christmas list!

The winner of the signed copy of Bittersweet is Laura from Texas! Laura hugs to you. Wish I could sit down with you and have coffee my friend....moving is hard. It's a heap O-lot a change in every ones lives when you move. I know you will enjoy this book!

Laura said...

Moving to TX, so far from home started bitter but is becoming sweet :)

Now for your noshing pleasure I wanted to share with you one of my richest, most decadent, chocolaty treats. Triple Chocolate Pound Cake....oh yeah baby...this cake is the bomb. Bomb of chocolate! If you live in the West Michigan area you might remember Bill Knapps Restaurants. This cake is reminiscent of their chocolate cake. I think they must have sold the rights to the recipe to Meijers Grocery stores because I have seen it in their bakery section. But I just can't bring myself to buy it when I can make this easy peasy cake at home. (Mine is better anyway.) This cake is so moist, and dense, and rich. It lasts for days. It's a dessert that is easy to make a few days in advance, just cover it up and hide it from your scoundrely husband that has a sweet tooth the size of Alaska!

Triple Chocolate Pound Cake

1 package devils food cake mix (the super moist brand)

1 package 5.9 ounce instant chocolate pudding

1 1/4 cup water

1/2 cup vegetable oil

4 eggs (yes I said 4, it's a pound cake remember)

3 cups semi-sweet chocolate chips

1/2 cup whipping cream

Preheat oven to 350 degrees, grease and flour bundt pan.

1. Mix first 5 ingredients, beat at medium speed for 2 minutes. Stir in 2 cups of chocolate chips. Pour batter into a greased and floured bundt pan.

PAUSE: Have you ever seen My Big Fat Greek Wedding? NO! Go rent it today! YES! Well then you know where I'm goin with this. The bundt cake scene gets me every time, I laugh hysterically like a hyena. Ok now back to our regularly scheduled recipe.

2. Bake at 350 degrees for 50 minutes. Cool for 15 minutes on wire rack. Remove cake from pan and cool completely on rack.

GLAZE: Combine remaining 1 cup chips and whipping cream in a saucepan. Cook on low heat stirring constantly until chips melt. Use a whisk to make sure glaze is smooth. Let stand for 5-10 minutes before drizzling over cake.

3. Move cake to cake plate and drizzle with chocolate glaze. All of it! Anything left in the pan you can take a banana and scrape it out and have your own little fondue party!

Who wouldn't like a piece of that goodness. Someone who doesn't care for chocolate I guess. But I don't really hang around with the likes of those kinds of people.

There's my rascally Kenny in the background. He had this piece of cake for lunch. How does this man stay so svelte? Makes me sick! If you don't remember, my husband...a.k.a. Kenny, is an E.R. doctor...physician...call it whatever you like, the group he works for has a mandatory 1 month off every 18. (mental health month) December is Kenny's month. He is home all day everyday. I guess you could say this is somewhat bittersweet for me, because as much as I love hangin with my man...I am not really used to having him around 24/7. He works ALOT! I am afraid I might get used to this or the kids might. We are going to go through serious withdrawal come January. No he is not driving me crazy....I just have my own little routine so having him around this much throws me for a loop. We did go see a move together in the middle of the afternoon this week. Now we know where all the retired people go after lunch. "Theater full of Q-tips", is what Kenny said. We saw Morning Glory....very cute, would recommend. Yesterday we went Christmas shopping together....unheard of in the 16 years of our marriage. Today we are sitting around eating chocolate cake!

Love you all so much, thanks for sharing your stories with me.

Have a great weekend!

reluctant entertainer WINNER!

Heather Nesbit is the winner of a signed copy of the Reluctant Entertainer by Sandy Coughlin. I am so excited for you to get this book in your hands! My contact information is in my profile shoot me an email Heather, my frand, with your mailing address and I will send you your copy faster than you can say Ojibwa! (Sorry it's late...I'm tired stuff like indian tribes start popping into my head.)

I have to say all your comments affected me ALOT. So much so that I just want to hug all of you who find entertaining so stressful, and even painful. I guess now you know you are not alone. There are definitely more of you that are reluctant entertainers than fearless.

I hafta fess up a bit. And tell you some of the things that freak me out about entertaining. First I should say that I am a people person, I love having people around so I think that helps me push my fears aside and invite regardless of how much I may be stressing out, on the inside.

Here is what I worry about. Not enough food....too much food....somebody finding one of my hairs in their food...the timing of the food....the pairing of the food. Good Golly Miss Molly...FOOD, FOOD, FOOD!

It's really ridiculous, because I think I only ran out of food once and it was after everyone had seconds. If I do have too much I always pawn it off on people or we just eat the leftovers in various versions of the original anyway. And I don't think anyone has ever found a hair in their food, if they have they were very kind and never said a thing. I think for the most part people are so glad that they are at my house enjoying themselves and not at theirs stressing out over the details, that I could probably feed them Spam on Toast and they would be happy....OK maybe not, but you get my point.

I pray this whole discussion challenges you to dig deep and find the courage to invite, to reach out. Getting around a table with people and breaking bread , can be life changing. To my friend who commented about meeting in a hall every year...first hugs to you the sadness in your comment gave me a poopy lip and got me all misty eyed. Start small, don't overwhelm yourself. And to the person who commented about a family member making a rude comment about your hostessing skills, next time give them a nuggie! From ME!

This won't be the last copy of Sandy's book I give away. But in the meantime, please check out her website it will give you many of the helpful tips you find in the book.

Hugs! Luv Ya,

Meghan said...

Zucchini! I love it sauteed in some EVOO and sprinkled with parmesan or coated with bread crumbs and parmesan and baked. Grilled sweet corn is also a favorite. And of course- POTATOES!!! Mashed, baked, fried. I'll take them any way they come!

Meghan I can't wait to send you your Farmer Market goodie Giveaway! Just click on the "view my complete profile" over there on the right. Get my email.....email me your full name and your mailing address and I will send it to you faster than I can pick my maters!

I LOVED hearing what vegis are your favorites. But most of all I LOVED hearing how you fix them. I was super duper excited that some of you shared actually recipes! I'm hear to tell you...YOU guys rock. Big time...your the best. I only wish I had 44 of everything to send to you all. Maybe someday.

I had my 5th grade statistician do a little tally to see what veggies you loved the best. But first of all, he wanted me to let you know that, a tomato is not a vegi it's a fruit. He was very worried about it and is standing right over my shoulder as I write making sure I set you all straight....(I say who cares, I grew up thinking they were a vegetable, Kenny is shocked at this moment that tomatoes are fruits, "who knew", he says. Apparently our 5th grader does. And this just proves that we are not smarter than our 5th grader.)

TOP VEGI PICKS
Tomatoes 18%
Cucumbers 11%
Broccoli 9%
Asparagus 9%
Carrots 9%
Squash 9%
Zucchini 9%
Corn6%
Celery 4.5%
Sweet Potatoes 4.5%
Artichokes, Cauliflower, Beets, Potatoes, Sugar Snap Peas, Green Beans 2%

I personally was surprised at the Green Beans coming in last. I am a vegi LOVER so it would be hard for me to pick too, but green beans would have been up there for me. I definitely need to try the Beet Hummus, and the Asparagus with Goat Cheese, Oh yeh people, I am all about that kinda yummy stuff!

This is my whole garden this year.
Kinda small, but really tomatoes, basil and oregano is all I really want in life....

Basil...I love this so much it's hard for me even to use it. I am so afraid that I will use it all up and then have no more. I am anxious for more tomatoes to get ripe so I can make a ginormous pot of Roasted Tomato Basil Soup. Oh this soup is what dreams are made of.

Have a great rest of your weekend! Now I must get back to my mountains of laundry.

Luv Ya more than my Basil!

Cold Tangerines WINNERS!!!

Oh I am so sorry that it took me longer than I anticipated to get the word out on the WINNERS of the very awesome book Cold Tangerines. First I want to say thank you all for your awesome comments. They made me get goose bumps. It was a hard post for me to write....thanks for encouraging me. I love you guys....I really do.

The reason for my tardy announcement is we are visiting our friends the Lindseys near Columbus, OH. This town rocks....1st because the Lindseys are here (Kennys went to Miami of Ohio with them both) and second because we found the most spectacular ice cream joint. Jeni's....cha, yummy. So yummy I am dang glad it's here and not anywhere near me. If it were I would be sportin' some extra baggage in my backside! And oh yeah we stayed up super late watching iCarly. I love Spencer, he's such a nutball.

Ok, Ok...bunny trail. Thanks to my good friend Randy Random here are the winners:
