Paczki! & Hairballs

This bakery was on the top of my "todo" list for today. It is finally Fat Tuesday today. As many of you know I was a bit over eager in my preparations for the Lenten Season. If you missed my over eagerness you can go back here and check it out. (Then if you have nothing better to do you can read this embarrassing post.)

Steenstra's Royal Dutch Bakery has been around for longer than I have been alive. It's the place to go for amazing hamburger buns, danishes, windmill cookies, donuts, oh the list goes on and on. It is, like the sign states, a Dutch bakery. Thus the Windmill cookies, which reminds me I need to send a supply of those to my mom in Florida.

But today this is what my eyes were set on. Paczki.

Paczki's are a traditional Polish donut filled with an assortment of fruit fillings. Prune being the most traditional. Paczki's are not to be confused with jelly donuts. The dough paczki's are made from has eggs and spirits in it, giving it a very distinct rich flavor.

Paczki Day. Do you have a Paczki Day in your town? It's a Midwestern thing. Primarily celebrated in cities with larger Polish communities the day before Ash Wednesday. The reason for making paczki was to use up all the "good stuff" before Lent began, like eggs, sugar, lard, and fruit.

Luckily I was able to savor half of this glorious prune filled paczki, because this is what I found when I returned from parent teacher conferences this afternoon.......

An EMPTY box!! And a huge mess on the floor sticky fruit, and powdered sugar EVERYWHERE!!!! Blasted KIDS! What the "beep beep" happened here??#@%! Even my other half of prune paczki was gone! "BEEP, beep, beep!" What kid would want the prune donut?

That's when my oldest daughter came running out, "MOM Jack ate all the donuts! I had one, Noah had one, then I left the box open (key word:OPEN) in the middle of the table......and well (breathless) Jack ate the rest! I just left for a minute...it was all the way in the middle....". She was frantic. And so was I. DAd-blamed DOG! Apparently he had been anticipating the Paczki's also. 4 1/2 Paczki's the size of large oranges are sitting in my golden retrievers gut just waiting to be vomited out on my rug. He has an ear infection right now, that's the only thing that is saving this $#@!Dog from a night in the garage!

Gone...gone....gone.....

There he is. He did get booted out for a little while.

It's cold out. He wants back in. He would stand like this for hours. Just waiting for the door to open. Or a bird to land on the door knob, we're not sure which.

ARG! Why does he have to be so sweet......and dumb!

Please mommy, I so sorry, I promise to never eat another paczki as long as I live.

A Dogs Prayer

Lord, today I ate my Masters donuts.
They were sinfully sweet. I thought they were meant to be my treat.
Please forgive me for I know not what I do.

Now I ask,
Lord if you could make this door open,
so I could go lay on my comfy bed.
I promise to never eat another Paczki for as long as I live.
Amen

Between eating my donuts and being a giant hairball this dog is definitely testing my love for him. Do they sell Paczki on Ash Wednesday? Because three human beings in this house did not get their annual paczki.

Good Golly Miss Molly!

Life is crazy around here sometimes.

Hoping your dog didn't eat your donut today.

a YEAR in review....

I attempted to sing you a song in my first blog post of the year....
Way to ring in the cheer....
If you could have heard me it woulda broke your ear!

Dumpers was my second post, way to be a downer.
The thought of facing three months of winter really made me cower.

On the 5th day of the new year I had a Confession to make regarding a certain addiction.
Thought I aught to lay it all out, hope my confession didn't make you have conniption!

After airing my dirty (chocolate) laundry,
on a whim, the very next day,
I took up a pioneering challenge,
to cook every recipe in The Pioneer Woman by Ree...

April Fools Day was the deadline...little did I know it would make Ree's Facebook headline. This caused quite a fuss!
Who woulda thunk I'd end up in Pawhusk!?

Some have made comment that it's been alot about P-Dub,
but really it's about all the things that I love...
Family, Cookin', Eaten', Travel, and more....

I have cooked up my fare share of goodies, but who's keepin' score?

Dinner Parties, Beef Stew (it's scheduled), Shrimp Boils, cakes and cookies TOO!

GIVEAWAYS are what really get me geeked! If I had a $$ Tree I'd do one every WEEK!

WHO knows what this next year will bring........
As I write Kenny is looking over our yearly expenses on edibles...
I am fearing I might only be blogging on vegetables!

This first full year of blogging has given many things:
-new friends
-tighter pants
-and the courage to publicly be a Ding- A-ling!

Thank you All for reading.
Putting up with my bad poems and goofy style.
Hoping this year I will bring to many a giggle and a Smile!

The End.....
My poem is through.
Here are a few random-shmandom pictures from the year I'd like to share with you.

Squeeak!

God Bless America!

i love my dad

i love my dad
he ain't that bad
never realy that sad
i lova my dada

OK, I have been burning the candle at both ends....lots of stuff going on around our house...but tonight when I went to blog about cooking my latest Pioneer Woman creation, I opened up my posting box and there under yet to be posted was this "i love my dad".

I blinked a couple times..

Rubbed my eyes...I am having a glass of wine..just one glass and I have barely had a sip...did I start a post titled "i love my dad"???? I do love my dad, but fathers day is a ways away and I really had no daddy poem plans.

Then it HIT me! Like a flying guinea pig. My oldest daughter posted. I had left my page up...and she took it upon herself to get creative...to blog like her mama.

I nearly erased it...and started to do MY own thing.

But, I couldn't, it was too darn sweet.

So there it IS..she is eleven I hope she is still writing poems about her daddy in 5 more years...

Well, now I better tell you about how fantabulously dinner turned out tonight.

P-dubs Linguine with Clam Sauce. This recipe has a story behind it. It's the stuff movies are made of quite literally!

Well, no movies going on in this house, only mystery bloggers.

Kenny had to work tonight, so he actually just ate his linguine warmed up, and the verdict was mmmmm, mmmm, scraping fork noise, mmmmm, more scraping fork noises. I think he likes it.

My 13 year old son had a friend over after school, I was worried he was going to kill me when I told him we were having Linguine with Clam Sauce....but he didn't even flinch. AND they all ate it. Even the friend. AND my pickiest eater, boy number two, 10 year old, mathematician, type A personality, cheese only pizza kid, but he is cute as a bugs ear....he took SECONDS. Completely unheard of. Ainslie, my poet, said she wants the leftovers in her lunch, not surprising.

Thanks Ree for helping me challenge the palate of my kiddos!

Big Hug to ya!
