Root Canal and ramblings......

Thello! E hadda geth a woot thanal thaday. Em a lithel numBah, and I'm dribblen' my coffee down my front, and spewing crumbs all over my key board....because heaven forbid I wait for the numbness to go away before I start to fill my pie hole again.

Yeah, so I finally got up the guts to go through with this root canal. I think I canceled it twice, and made excuses for a year or so, then I had to get braces put back on my teeth because I was naughty and didn't wear my retainer at night......well really I lost it while on vacation and then just totally forgot about it. Out of sight out of mind. So the braces held the root canal off for another 9 months. When I was in for my last cleaning, they hog tied me and sucked my spit and blew air in my mouth until I cried UNCLE and made an appointment.....fer this gal-darn woot thanal.

PAUSE: If you have had a root canal, you know they are really not that bad. It's just me. It's me being scared of possible torture, and then the fact that I just can't stand to sit still, in a dentist chair, for 90 minutes, it cramps my style in more ways than you know. Resume rambling......

I subconsciously forgot to write this appointment in on my calendar....if I had an iPhone then I could do it all immediately from that device and sync it to my computer, but for now I'm stuck with the paper calendar hanging on a nail from the cupboard, which I frequently forget to write things in...and sometimes when I do it's a pain because the ink doesn't want to write cause my pen is virtually upside down while writing........SO back to my forgetting to write it on the calendar. I knew I had scheduled it in May sometime after the departure of our house guests. I called my dentist office on Monday hoping it was a couple weeks out so I would have time to make an excuse and reschedule with out being a total annoyance to the scheduler.

MY PHONE CALL: me "Good Morning! How are you this morning? This is Sheila Johnson...Hey I was wondering....cause I kinda forgot to write it on my calendar.....um....when is that root canal I scheduled?" them....a little too quickly "We are looking forward to seeing you 9 am THIS Thursday morning!" the looking forward to seeing you made me feel guilty about potentially wanting to break our date and then the speed of the answer made me wonder if they had been waiting for my call. Hmmmmm....they probably have had big lime green post-it notes all over the break room and on every computer screen SHEILA JOHNSON MAY 12, 9AM DON'T LET HER CANCEL!!! me "Oh great! I will see you then". Hang up, GASP, pant.....grumble "criminy" under my breath....UGH! I was just gonna have to suck it up and get it over with.

This was the morning. The root canal morning. All week long my kids kept asking me about Thursday..."can we do this that or the other thing?", and my dramatic reply was "that's the day of my ROOT CANAL!". Like I was having heart surgery or something. I know I'm a kook. Now it's only two hours later, the worst part is over, and I am wondering what the HECK I was being such a drama queen about. I am still numb, however. Maybe by the time I get done with my rambling...if you are still with me I will tell you different.

So this is how it all went down....I arrive. They don't even let me get comfy in the waiting room...they take me right back, and seat me in a comfy chair, legs up, head rest....one of those posturepedic types. First they take a mold of my tooth area to make the temporary and eventually my new permanent toof. Then the dental girl (sorry I know there is a more technical term, but that's what I call her), Kristin, she's super sweet, shoves a whole lottah cotton soaked in numbing medicine back in the lower, right corner of my mouf. That gets to stay there for a few minutes while she gets me all hooked up with my bib and suctions tools, and a chest full of other things of which I have no vocabulary for. The new thing this time was that I could have my very own iPod with Pandora and headphones to jam out during my procedure, then of course the cool sunglasses. I was lookin' smokin' HOT! Why I didn't have Kristin take a picture is beyond me...I know you would have loved to see me like this....as I would you.

Then entered my Dentist. Very nice man, with blindingly white toofs. Good thing I had my sun glasses on. After a little bit of small talk, he got right down to the business of "numbing me up". The worst part by far. Thank goodness for the distractions of Pandora, and that my hair was caught between the chair and my dentists belly and was pulling rather hard, OUCH! After the shots they left me alone to let it all sink in.

Re-enter dentist, now I am numb, but wishing that I could also have the red Bozo Nose laughing gas too, just like when I was a kid, but I figure its too late to ask. He tips my chair way back. That's when it happens....the post nasal drip.

PAUSE: In the Spring I always go through a period of nasal congestion and this irritating feeling of globs of glue running down the back of my throat. It usually does not bother me too badly, that is until I lay down.....

I feel it start to build, the snot glob, I try to calmly swallow, but then my tongue starts to whack out and convulse. Then I feel the hot rush of sweat from my armpits. None too soon comes the smell of burning flesh. UGHa! You know that smell of hair burning? (Don't tell me you never yanked your hair out as a kid and burned it over your mothers favorite center piece candle.) So I open my eyes maybe I could make eye contact, but I have dark sunglasses on....all I see is my tooth particles flying in the air before my eyes like gnats in the night. I attempt to take a deep cleansing breath through my nose, which only further assits the snot glob farther down my throat....I wonder can they see snot globs sliding down peoples throats as they work. And If they can why don't they take that sucker thing and just suck it right outta there? I would have really appreciated that. I guess I could have put my hand up like they said I should if I was in need, but my fingers were clinging so tightly to the armrests that I forgot I even had arms. SNORK! Oh my! Did I really just gag-snore? I was trying to avoid that loud SNORK sound, but my body was out of control. I opened my eyes again, it was like it never happened, no one even cracked a smile. Are you joking...if I were a dentist and someone SNORKED that loud while I was drilling the ba-geebies out of their mouth, I would have at least given them a little crooked smile....like whoops, those things happen. Instead I SNORK and I'm left laying there wondering....did I really just SNORK loudly, and then gag myself or was it all apart of my very vivid imagination.

ZZZzzzzzzziiinggg...zzzzzzzzzzzwwwwheeeee zzzzzweeeee-weeeee-wweee=weee a few more zings and loud whizzes and my dentist was proclaiming he was all done. No mention of the gagging snort noise I made, no side ways glances at the dentist girl. Maybe I didn't snork....I was too chicken to ask, and I was afraid to talk all numbed up. What's more pathetic snorking loudly or snorking loudly and then asking about it when your mouth is numb and your tongue is hanging to the side like a dead deer. I decided it was best not to bring it up. I wonder if my dentist put in his notes: patient has heavy post nasal drip and snorks.

How was your last dental experience?

OK my tongue is starting to tingle, but my wips are still numbah.

In the words of Edith Ann....."Thaths the troof, Pthhhhhhh!"

My Momma.....

I hadn't planned on blogging today, but I woke up with this song in my head.

I haven't heard this song in years. It was one I heard often as a child, and it always made me sad.

As an adult it makes me cry like a baby....ugly cry, snot, sob, boo-hoo....until five minutes ago I had never read the lyrics. In the song her mama makes her a coat from a box of multi colored rags and tells her the story of Joseph then she says "Perhaps the coat will bring you good luck and happiness" and she blesses it with a kiss. OK tears start flowing here......then the other kids make fun of her coat made of rags....snot flying.....the little girl tells them of the love her momma sewed in every stitch and told them the story of Joseph from the Bible. It's the last line that really gets me howlin'........

"Now I know we had no money but I was rich as I cold be in my coat of many colors my momma made for me.....just for me."

This is my Momma winter of 1968, pregnant with me. Poor dear she looks so happy...she had no idea what she was in for after the fruit of her womb was brought into the world.

Growing up in a "tiny town" in the Mid-West...we had a lot of NOTHIN'. More than alot of nothing......I was always wanting something, and couldn't figure out why I couldn't get it. Oh I was a brat. I am sure I gave my Mom fits. She has never said that....but I know I did. My Momma sewed too. She sewed me many outfits...polyester outfits. In High School she sewed my formals for me, they were gorgeous....no one ever made fun of me like in the song. I just never fully appreciated all my Momma did for me, until I was a momma.

I wish I would have realized earlier in life the truth of this line in Dolly's song....

"But they didn't understand it and I tried to make them see that one is only poor if they choose to be."

I wish I would have been more appreciative of my momma, how hard she worked to make things good for my sister and I. My Mom now lives hundreds of miles away and it's been a long time since we spent Mothers Day together. I'll call her, and see what she's up to today...so far away...then tell her to read my blog. I don't like to get all weepy and sappy over the phone.

I love you Mom...you're the best!

Happy Mothers Day!

Blessed a Mothers Day GIVEAWAY!

Mothers Day is one week away. I am always overwhelmed with gratitude on Mothers Day. I have been blessed with four amazing children! And I also am blessed to be surrounded by many amazing women! My Mom, my Grandmothers, Mother-n-laws, Aunts, my Mom's friends who are like mothers to me, friends, different women at church and in my community. All mothers.

All inspire and bless me daily!

Several years back I felt compelled to reach out and let some of these women know, how much they meant to me. I wanted to encourage them, and let them know that I noticed what awesome mothers, grandmothers, and aunts they are! Because sometimes being a mother can be a little thankless.

I bought a box of Day Spring cards, then I made a list of women. I told each one exactly how they inspired me and how BLESSED I was to have them in my life. I hadn't intended this to be something I would do every year, but when one mother told me, with tears in her eyes, that the card I had sent her was the only card she had received for Mothers Day that year....first I went and kicked her husband in the keester and then I decided I needed to try and do this every year. Sometimes, the women I send cards to, are women I hardly know, but they came to mind so I send them a card. (I was just kidding about the keester part by the way...but I thought about it.)

Over the last year and a half this blog has put me in touch with so many amazing women! (and some amazing men too!) I wanted to do something to tell you how much you bless me everyday. You encourage and inspire me in so many ways. I don't know what I would do with out you! Really! No foolin! Ok, I'm starting to tear up. Don't make me cry!

Robin is designing my new adventure...Eat 2gather...more about that later. Robin is not only a wife and mother, she is also a Graphic Designer/Web Designer, AND she has her own jewelry line Design Smith, which you can check out on her Etsy Store. God has put some REALLY incredible women in my life, sometimes I have to pinch myself I can't believe how blessed I am!

Because you all are so awesome, and I am so blessed to have you in my life! I asked Robin if she would be willing to do a giveaway! She said YES! She created the two beautiful pendants. I couldn't choose which one to give away. I love them both! So if you win, you get to do the choosing for yourself.

munchies and RAMBLINGS.........

Bacon and Blue Cheese Sweet Potato NACHOS!

Is anyone with me on this one? Three of my favorite foods. Why wouldn't they be fantastic together? Well they are!

However, they are not a lite bed time snack.....So possibly a whole cookie sheet full of Blue Cheese and Bacon Sweet Potato Nachos was a bit too much snack for just myself.

Yeh, NO. No one else in this household was willing to share in my heavenly snack with me. In fact they all acted like I was eating poo or something. Hey more for me.

This the kind of thing I fix myself to eat when my Lover is out of town. Horrible. I turn into another person when he is out of town. I eat all kinds of junk, take the kids out to eat alot, and I eat munchies like the above, IN BED. Gasp!

Ken would never deny me a luverly snack, but he wouldn't appreciate me crawling into bed next to him with a plate full of these babies. He would never say anything, I just know it would annoy him. You know how you just know these things about your spouse, with out him ever having to say, "Honey you totally gross me out when you crawl into bed with a plate of Cheese and Bacon Nachos that smell like my gym shorts".

So I save munching on blue cheese in bed for when my better half is out of town.

My Kenny works ALOT, but he doesn't have to travel too often for work. For that I am thankful. I don't know how some of you do it, that have a traveling spouse. I hate it when he's gone. I hate it when he has to work. In fact I CAN'T WAIT until he can retire. God willing we will both be healthy and be able to enjoy each other in his retirement years.

I have been feeling overly dependent on my Lover these last couple days. I think because he has been working long hours and now he is going out of town, then he gets home and it's busy, busy, busy life with work, and kids, and yadayadayada. I am sure you all know how it is. Then I leave for 4 days with our oldest son to NYC. When I return it's right back to work for Kenny.

Am I preachin' to the choir?

Sorry....life get's crazy doesn't it.

Of course, God had just the perfect words for me this morning. In the midst of my hectic morning, four kids to school at three different times, and getting my Lover out the door. I took a minute to quick cram in my devotion.

The first line said, "This is the time in your life when you must learn to let go".

Wow, really?

Then the scripture was this..."do not fear; I will help you.", and "The Lord is my helper; I will not be afraid."

God is so good! Even though I was trying to quick throw Him into my morning, haphazardly I must say. He chose to ease my anxiousness about my husband being gone, and gently remind me, Hey! I am your all in all. Sheila all you really need is me, I gave you Ken as your life companion, but you need to look to me, your God. I am all you need.

Phew! I feel like a new woman. I so needed that reminder. I can handle it with Gods help. That takes alot of pressure off my Kenny too. Although, it would have been nice if he would have remembered to change that light bulb by the back door before he left, the one that's too high for me and I need to get a ladder. GOD HELP ME!

I hope you're encouraged to know that God wants to be your all in all. People will fail you and have to leave you to fend for yourself, no matter how much they love you. But God never fails or leaves us.

Now Lord, can you help me eat this with out any of those nasty fat cells exploding around my middle.

Thank you Lord.

Amen.

Cards..

I have an obsession for funny cards. I can't buy just one. The problem lies mainly in the fact that I can't make a decision...when it comes to cards. I have been known to give someone more than one card. I have a group of girly~friends that go out for lunch for our birthdays. The Rule is NO gifts only cards, ONLY silly cards....bordering on naughty.

So today we are meeting for Rebecca's birthday at my favorite restaurant in this city, The Green Well. I've been saving up the calories for this lunch...since, well since breakfast this morning. Sorry I am not a good calorie counter person.

I went to the Hallmark Store last night to get a card. Of course I found one for many other friends as well. And of course ended up sitting on the floor in front of the cards, snorting and practically crying cause I was laughing so hard. I was alone. I know.....mortifying. That's me. I'm pathetic. Get me in a card store and it's pure embarrassment for my children. My daughter was smart she chose to linger in the "teeny~bopper" store.

Now I can't decide which one to give my gal. Will you help me?

#1

Kinda naughty...but not too bad.

#2

LOVE this one. Good Golly Miss Molly...I would definitely wear a bucket on my head.

#3

Can you say...HELP me Lord to never do this?! Have I done this? Hoping not, making note to not talk about my sinuses or bladder to total strangers.

#4

BACON! Am I the only one that can appreciate this card?

#5

This one is for my brother-n-law. MMMhmmm...you think we haven't noticed.

#6

Need I say more?

#7

Huh? What?

#8
I will not print the punch line for this card, for fear it might offend any flatulent~phobic readers. I have the perfect friend in mind for this card. You know who you are.

#9

Yes Myrtle! You ROCK!

#10
This is my all time FAVORITE card. I have given it at least 3 times.

Good Golly, I about pee myself every time I read it. Arm dangle makes me giggle.....Ahahaha~snort~snot~snertk!

There they are, all 10. Which one is your favorite? Can you guess which one I might give?

Hope you have a good laugh today...maybe you should head on over to your nearest card aisle.

It's true laughter IS good for what ails ya!

Almond Cherry Scones and a prank

If you are not into people airing their dirty laundry....in other peoples front yards well then you might just want to move on to the next blog on your Google Reader. But you might want to stick around for this one, even if you think you're not into that sorta thing.

Over a decade ago a good friend of mine from another city, we used to live, in pulled a very memorable prank on a friend of hers that was turning 40. It was hilarious, I thought. I couldn't wait to do it to someone. But who? This was not the type of prank that just anyone would appreciate. It had to be the perfect, fun lovin', gotta screw or two loose kinda friend. Someone like myself.

Ok if you are ready to be done with this story and just want the recipe feel free to skip my hilarious prank and go here for the Almond Cherry Scones. No hard feelings.

The prank involved collecting a large number of brassieres. Yes I said brassieres. Bra's. Over the shoulder bolder holders(OTSBH). What ever you call them. I needed at least 50 to pull off this prank. Almost 10 years ago every time one of my OTSBHs needed to be replaced, I would toss it in a bag in my laundry room.

Girlfriends birthdays came and went. A couple times I plotted to carry out the prank, but it never worked out. The timing was always off.

Until a few nights ago.

You know my friend Big D? (Who is really quite little, but that's another story.)

Well what do you know she just so happened to be turning 40! FINALLY, this was IT the chance to pull off the brassiere prank. And as luck would have it Big D's neighbor was all about helping pull off this dastardly deed. Plus she contributed to the OTSBH collection as did a few other friendly neighbors, plus a stop at the Dollar Store, yes they sell bras, we ended up with 74 bras!

What does this all have to do with Almond Cherry Scones? Hold on I'm getting to that!!!!

Thankfully Big D turns in quite early for bed, but her husband does not. He had the house lit up like a Christmas tree. It was getting late (11pm) and Kristen and I were about ready to turn into pumpkins, so we decided to take the chance of getting caught and go for it. We tip toed in our head to toe black sneakin' around cloths, cause as you know we sneak around at 11pm at night alot, NOT! As I was sayin' we tip toed over and hung the sign on her front porch.

Then we proceeded to string bra-garland in the bushes, trees and across the garage door. We also hung them individually in trees.

Oh I haven't had this much fun since I.....well we won't go there now will we.

At one point I looked over and my accomplice had brought a ladder over and had leaned it up against a tree and was carefully placing the brassieres just so in the tree. For some reason this gave me the giggles.

Oh my Heavens to Betsy! Remember my bladder is old and giggling violently at 11pm is not advised....but I was able to get it under control and I continued sling shooting them, while she was being so precise. What a freeeaking riot.

Good Golly Miss Molly! We got her good! I think my family, as well as Big D's neighbors think I have a screw loose. Well they are wrong. I DO have a screw loose.

Big D loved it! She thought is was hilarious and refused to let her husband remove them from their yard. She wanted EVERYONE to know "Gol Darn It" that she indeed needed their support....because 74 brassieres was just NOT gonna do the trick on her 40th birthday!

Here is where the Almond Cherry Scones come in. Big D lover her some scones, and because I was feeling slightly silly and foolish and guilty about making such a spectacle of my friend and her family, I thought I owed her a very special treat. Please do try them they are scrump-dilly-icious! Recipe is HERE.

Let it be known I will air out my brassieres in your lawn on milestone birthdays.

Old Folks BEWARE!

a Storm, and TWO lists

Apparently thars a winter storm heading our way. Or the way of half of America, from the sounds of it. I rarely watch the weather, or the news. It's all so down right depressing. The news that is.

The weather is just plain unpredictable. It's the "lake effect" thing here in Michigan. The weather just goes and does crazy things when it comes across that big ol' fresh water pond out there. So, yeah....like I was sayin' I usually don't bother worrying about the weather.

I think everybody else was doing enough worrying for the both of us. Jeepers Creepers you would have thought it was the return of the Storm from 1978....anyone else remember that storm? That fuzzy picture up there is me standing on a snowdrift on our road. I was wearing the latest fashions in navy and yellow snowmobile suits, accompanied by hand me down boots from my uncle.

It was certifiably a mad house in Meijers yesterday. Everybody and their brother were out, grabbing stuff, filling their carts.

While I was in the store I got to thinking that this coming Sunday is Super Bowl and what if we are snowed in and can't get out to get groceries until after Super Bowl Sunday. Well then I needed to start thinking about what we might be eating on Sunday....even though it was only Monday!

See this is why I avoid the weather and the news because I tend to blow things out of proportion and I would be stocking up for 2012's game day, if I let my mind do it's own thing!

I hadn't really planned on sharing a list of my favorite appetizers this week. Since it's suppose to be my week of Valentines Day inspired food....but hey life happens. And this is my blog and I can deviate from my plan....right?

Here are a few of my easy, crowd pleasing appetizers, and a couple of my favorites from another site I happen to use alot.

LIST #1 Super Bowl APPETIZERS

Next week if you haven't heard I have a WHOLE week of fantabulous GIVEAWAYS lined up. I am SO excited!

You have no idea. I am so excited I could hug somebody until their head popped off!!! Is that bad? Weird? Freaky.....OK forget I said that just know I am super excited to be giving away the following:

LIST #2 Stuff I'm GIVING AWAY!

1. Something you might hang on your wall and something you wear while cooking. Both being in the theme of my favorite morning beverage.

2. Gold, Silver, Hip, Hot and super fun to wear.

3. The Greatest Love store every told...in the form of a book.

4. Having troubles to inviting your friends over for Super Bowl Sunday...well I think you might need this THING.

5. 12 delights that will make you say, " OOhh-my-my I think I might die".

Did you really think I was going to let the cat out of the bag on my GIVEAWAYS next week?

What do think I am a blabber mouth, a spoil sport, a party stomper?

I gave you some pretty good hints...if you know me or have been reading for a while you will probably guess them all.

OK ladies and gents...that's all I got. I would love to know what you are fixing for Super Bowl Sunday. Feel free to link a recipe in the comments.

Remember it's nice to share!

Now I am going to tame the wild Indians in my home. They are staging a SNOW DAY revolt!

Help Meh!
